Aptly Named Midnight Oil Brings The Irony To BP With “Progress”

So I was mowing the lawn the other day and “Progress” by Midnight Oil (one of the most underrated bands ever, to me) popped up on the iPod. Even while trying to navigate the mess of weeds without getting a contact allergy or poison ivy, some of the lyrics jumped out at me:

Say yes to a real-life ambition, say yes to our hopes and our plans
Forget about your indecision, let’s get the beast off our land
A tree that can grow no longer, a beach that has got no sand
I would pay out a king’s ransom, if we could just understand

It was the “a beach that has got no sand” that particularly struck me, with the irony being that we were in the midst of the Deepwater Horizon fiasco, as deluged with images of destroyed beaches as the Gulf was deluged with oil.

Got your last meal, filled up with pesticide
Hamburger chain, third-world infanticide
Got robot cars, your jobs will disappear
It’s the politics of a brand-new year

I was one that was hopeful that the new administration wouldn’t give short shrift to environmental concerns, and while we have made some headway in that sector, I’m disappointed in the continued lack of emphasis or progress there. The politics of a brand-new year have yet to filter down to protecting Mother Earth, at least as of yet.

You may be safe in your hemisphere
But there’s so much junk in the stratosphere
We’ve got our eyes on the firmament, hands on the armaments
Heads full of arguments and words for our monuments

Here was a song originally held up as an anthem in the wake of the Exxon Valdez, the first unheeded warning we received about the perils of our petroleum lives. So when will we learn? How much will have to die or be destroyed before we do? And is it already too late?

Some say that’s progress
I say that’s cruel

So do I, Midnight Oil.

So do it.

Think about it.

Limerick Friday LXXXXXXXXXXXXXXVI: Show Us Don’t Tell Us, BP, Plus John Daly Brings Hooters To Scotland

A cap that finally works?
Anyone trust those BP jerks?
I won’t hold my breath
As the Gulf suffers oily death
Now will we end oil-lobby perks?

RIP to Steinbrenner at last
Though he was lacking in class
And many men did he buy and sell
Set the standard for owning well
“Seinfeld’s” parodies of him were a gas

Another round added to the Big Dance
More money into the NCAA’s pants
“March Madness” is becoming fake
Not sure how much more I can take
Of mind-numbing “poetry” from Jim Nance

Oil comes down to dollars and cents
Tired of mistakes that are immense
Will we finally learn our lesson
And stop all the second-guessin’
Alternative energy only makes sense

British Open is now underway
A beautiful course on display
Yet with the wind down
63s and 65s abound
Methinks St. Andrews will have the last say

BP's Latest Trick: Burning Sea Turtles

And on top of all that, just in case you needed more proof that these fuckers just don't get it ...

*sigh*

Limerick Friday LXXXXXXXXXXXXXXIII: No Apologies For BP, Plus The Greatest Tennis Match Ever Is Like Energizer Bunny

The wildlife death tally does rise
As fast as the number of BP lies
The right would rather BP defend
Will the spill ever come to an end?
Somewhere, Mother Earth softly cries

Graeme McDowell, well-played, sir
Phil, Ernie, Tigger couldn’t make a stir
Par was good there at Pebble
The Open course played like a devil
Guinnesses were raised o’er Ireland, sure

McChrystal ran things in Afghanistan
Then earned himself a shitcan
Involved in the Tillman coverup
Then didn’t know when to shut up
Anyone know how this war should be ran?

Bad calls made us all fret
Missed shots on an open net
Up until the final minute
When Donovan finally did win it
USA won their group? You bet

An 11-hour match I did root
Between Isner and a Frog, Mahut
Because of darkness delays
It extended over three days
Played so long I wanted to boot

Hitler Weighs In On The BP Oil Disaster

Sorta speaks for itself, don't it?

Limerick Friday LXXXXXXXXXXXXXXII: Not So Sure He’s Solid As Barack, Plus Drama Queens In Shin Guards

His record on the environment quite bleak
To civil liberties he’s turned the other cheek
He ran on a ticket of change
But decisions have been quite strange
Obama, you gotta prove you’re really unique

The World Cup has more dives than goals
The English keeper might get shot full of holes
Some don’t like the vuvuzela hum
Some think the new ball’s a bum
But South Africa is full of football-mad souls

Haynesworth acting like a douchy dick
The new definition of a selfish prick
Took $100 mil a year ago
Now looking for elsewhere to go
The part of pro sports that makes me sick

Stuck in D.C., away from my loves
Put up with two ditzy English doves
And an inept loser who defines “tool”
Though our capital is pretty cool
Delayed flight had me pleading to the above

Used to love the Lake Show
Magic played with rhythm and flow
Now Kobe is a bitchy fink
And Artest gives thanks to his shrink
How fucking low can the NBA go?

And one for the road …

As I was missing Mommy and Ube
Saw more fucked-up effects of BP
While an opposite ecology in San Fran
A vital tool for a social media fan
A hectic week yearns for a beer or three

Fuck You, BP

So an AP reporter dove into the Gulf oil spill. The results are hard to look at.

Limerick Friday LXXXXXXXXXXXXIX: NFL Says “Too Bad” To Fat Cats Who No Likey Football Outside, Plus A Somber So Long To Epic “Lost”

Super Bowl in NY four years hence
Now let the bitching commence
“It’ll be cold,” complains the bitch
“And outside,” whines the rich
But football in the elements makes sense

Obama’s great move (‘bout time)
Was a response to the BP crime
A moratorium on Arctic drilling
To avoid more goddam oil spilling
Because it ain’t the oil that’s the slime

For “Sex and the City,” this one’s new
A show about three ‘hos and a shrew
Everyone’s been saying the same
That it’s both “cartoonish” and “lame”
Did Captain Obvious write this review?

Facebook privacy is the issue of the day
Selling information to third parties just won’t pay
They’ve got a broken business model
Can’t make money so they broke the bottle
Just quit being secretive—what do you say?

The ending we feared finally came
A finale worthy of the “Lost” name
It was the ultimate gift Jack gave
But his soul he ironically did save
Now TV will never be the same

Limerick Friday LXXXXXXXXXXXXVII: Mother Earth Is Crying, Plus “Lost” Twins Fight For The Light

What was blue, we’ve turned black
Of calamities, there is no lack
We kill oceans with our black gold
To the green we’ve our souls sold
Ever think the Earth’s fighting back?

After a State grad lost one in a bar
New iPhone searches have gone far
They turn up without fail
Even on the Ho Chi Minh Trail
Good pub to shine Apple’s star

“Superconferences” the talk of the day
One step below playing for pay
The Big 12 raped by the Big 10?
The SEC stealing from the ACC again?
Amateurism has almost gone away

Miro, Del.icio.us and FriendFeed
Utterli, Audacity, 12 seconds.tv
For pictures, use Flickr
To converse, how about Twitter
Be so cutting edge that you’ll bleed

Turns out they were twins after all,
Black vs. white, then the fall
Their mother killed giving birth
Thought the island was all the Earth
Better protect the cave of light, y’all

Limerick Friday LXXXXXXXXXXXXV: Good Riddance To The Bitch In Cleats, Plus Be Wary Of The MIB, Jack

Ned Ginn, you were the jokes’ butts
‘Cuz your drops drove us all nuts
No more sideline dashes
Or assuming the fetal position on the hashes
Hope you someday find some guts

A flaming oil rig is a fearful sight
It burned and sank into the night
11 workers are missing as of this post
As crude oil pollutes the Louisiana coast
Happy goddam Earth Day, right?

It was around the time of Lent
When the Pope urged all to repent
For the scandal that rocked the church
Sitting on a hypocritical perch
Can faith be restored on prayers heaven-sent?

A trade-down came eventually
So obvious even Stevie Wonder could see
They say this Odrick can play
Better than the Jared from Subway
But we need a lot more on Days 2 and 3

Sun and Jin reunited with a wow
Sawyer’s double-cross backfired with a pow
Jack was in a daze
So MIB said with intense gaze,
You’re with me now
