Day 1,172, Quasi-Quarantine: "The Office" Is Found In The "City Of Fire"

It's been jarring to watch "City on Fire" without being distracted by how much the 'bag husband in the show looks like Ryan Howard from "The Office."

Actor Ashley Zukerman -- performing as the adroitly-'baggy-named Keith Lamplighter -- is a dead ringer for Ryan's B.J. Novak. So much so that I spend much of "City on Fire" waiting for Keith to pull a scam on Kelly Kapoor in Central Park.

Run your game, Temp.

Day 762, Quasi-Quarantine: "Severance" Gets "The Office" Treatment

I've been a huge fan of "Severance," so it pains me a little to admit that I was slightly underwhelmed by the season finale. The optimist in me (yes, it exists) believes that the show is just setting up a more stunning second season.

Anyway, this "The Office"-inspired intro sendup is a spot-on way to conclude the first season of one of the more remarkable new shows to hit the small screen in recent years.

Day 668, Quasi-Quarantine: Bidding Adieu To A Stellar "The Office" Advent Calendar

In contrast to a rather disappointing Star Wars Lego advent calendar, this year's Funko Pop! "The Office" advent calendar was just off-the-charts good.

We've discussed the Week 1Week 2, and Week 3 hauls, so an abbreviated Week 4 brought the haul to a close as *sniff* Christmas passed.

Here were the final reveals:

Day 22: Jan Levinson-Gould (complete with candle and wine glass)
Day 23: Elf Dwight
Day 24: Santa Michael

All told, in the immortal words of Clark W. Griswold, this really enhanced my holiday spirit -- and I can't wait to see what themes Funko explores in coming years.

(That's what she said.)

Day 647, Quasi-Quarantine: "The Office" Funko Advent Calendar Cements Legendary Status With Week 3 Haul

After a first week littered with the stars and a second week highlighted by some "B" players, week three brought some truly stellar finds.
  • Day 15: Kevin with pot of chili
  • Day 16: Michael with doo-rag
  • Day 17: Mose
  • Day 18: Belschnickel!
  • Day 19: Kelly Kapoor in Casual Friday attire
  • Day 20: Ryan with dyed hair and shades
  • Day 21: Creed
In last week's recap, I mentioned the hope for four characters, and I was half right. I had also -- somehow -- omitted the need for a Creed Bratton, and Funko came through with a "Chase" version of the larger Creed Funko, complete with blood and a "Boo" cup.

With three days left, I can speculate that there may be a Santa Claus version of Michael Scott, with the potential for a Roy, Jan, or *fingers crossed* Todd Packer.

I couldn't be happier with the third week's reveals, and overall this has been an amazing collectible calendar -- a true gift in the Michael Scott sense.

"Presents are the best way to show someone how much you care. It is like this tangible thing that you can point to and say, 'Hey man, I love you this many dollars worth.'"

Day 640, Quasi-Quarantine: The Second Week Of "The Office" Funko Advent Calendar Brings Some Beauts

After summarizing the first week of the Funko Pop! "The Office" advent calendar, it's high time to get updated on what the second week of surprises has brought:
  • Day 8: Angela with cat
  • Day 9: Andy Bernard with banjo
  • Day 10: Phyllis
  • Day 11: Dundee!
  • Day 12: "Casual Friday" Meredith
  • Day 13: Toby with "Suck on this" rock
  • Day 14: Jim as Goldenface
While this is quite a run of memorable characters, the highlight thus far is Meredith Palmer, complete with censored exposed boob as part of her wardrobe "malfunction."

I'm hopeful that next week brings Kelly Kapoor, Jan Levinson-Gould, Ryan Howard, and maybe even Todd Packer. But if I had a strong quibble thus far, it's that we are two weeks into the calendar and still no Kevin.

Make this right, Funko.

Day 633, Quasi-Quarantine: Living My Best Season With The Funko Pop "The Office" Advent Calendar

The Funko Pop! "The Office" advent calendar has been a welcome addition to the holiday season ... despite a not-insignificant part of me missing the beer advent calendar from last year.

The first week of pocket Pops from the calendar has featured:
  • Day 1: Michael
  • Day 2: Jim
  • Day 3: Pam
  • Day 4: Darryl
  • Day 5: Dwight
  • Day 6: Oscar
  • Day 7: Stanley
The highlight thus far has been "Florida Stanley," complete with straw hat, pink "Miami Vice" shirt, and sunglasses.

With so many of the main characters already unveiled, I look forward to some of the hilarious side characters -- Creed, Angela, Toby, Phyllis, Kevin, Meredith, etc. -- getting their day in the sun.

Michael: "Christmas is cancelled."
Stanley: "You can't cancel a holiday."
Michael: "Keep it up, Stanley, and you'll lose New Year's."

Limerick Friday LXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXIII: The End Of An Error, Plus A Most-Anticipated Season Finale

I polled each bobblehead
About ending the days of dread
Even nodding Michael Scott goes
“Yeah, this company blows”
(“That’s what she said”)

When the going gets rough for fools
Saban tries to change the rules
The hypocrite says, “It’s too fast!”
“Injuries happen when we’re gassed!”
STFU and coach up your cretin tools

Inept, fat and snorin’
Sportswriters keep ignorin’
The easy choice for ACC’s best
And it’s really no contest
Even the blind can vote T.J. Warren

My five years are done
Now they’re left with one
A third-strike British joke
Their reputation up in smoke
No fun + no business won

An epic finale now in sight
“True Detective” set up for a fight
Nothing will live up to the hype
But this is a show that can break type
Carcosa and other answers Sunday night

Limerick Friday LXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXV: More Flops Than A Fat Kid At The Pool, Plus Rejection The Theme Of “Mad Men”

Wanted to see what NBA playoffs was about
And a Euroleague soccer match broke out
Flopping around like gutted fish
Whining, falling and the occasional swish
Basketball has become the WWE, no doubt

Lives shattered
Belongings scattered
The air a turbulent force
Screams ‘til they were hoarse
Oklahoma, resilient but battered

Excellence comes with a cost”
The loss of shows like “Lost”
Plus “Touch” and “Fringe”
“The Office” left an emotional twinge
TV’s bad enough without good shows being tossed

Blue tents pierce the heavy air
Loss scattered here and there
Symbolize broken hearts
Signify the ends to starts
And an ascension to where

At work, Megan with much to learn
Joan rebuffed Roger with a burn
Don slept with his ex, unplanned
But skinny Betty now has hand
And lonely Peg has nowhere to turn

Limerick Friday LXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXIV: “The Office” Says A Teary Goodbye, Plus “Mad Men” Devolves Into Fever Dreams And ‘Ho Houses

Dwight and Angela wed
Many a tear was shed
Todd Packer was left out
The ending made us cry and shout
That is what she said

Comments from Sergio pathetic
For his brain he needs a medic
Played the fried chicken card
Came across like a Eurotrash ‘tard
Takes a lot to make Tigger sympathetic

A real Monster of the Midway
A master of the turnover and takeaway
Now number 54
Will patrol the middle no more
Next stop: Canton someday

Another puppy lost for we
Joining Ike, Foster and Cleo, just three
Heaven, be put on notice
She’ll frolic with Gallo and Otis
Miss Jackson, so missed you’ll be

Agency gets speed injected from behind
Grandma Ida robbed them blind
Don turns into a sweaty stalker
Rizzo kissed Peg, who’s a talker
Flashbacking Don leaves Chevy in a bind

I’ll Never Look At Life—Or Copy Paper—The Same Way Again: The Beautiful, Broken Vision Of “The Office”

“I wish there was a way to know you’re in the good ol’ days before you’ve actually left them.” ~Andy Bernard

And thusly, not with a guffaw but a sniffle, “The Office” ended.

The emotions came freely for me, which was both expected and unexpected. Cheesy as it is to say, this innovative sitcom with a heart was always more than a show to me. So in a sense, it very much felt as if a chapter is closing not only in television, but in my life.

Along the course of its nine-year run, some elements of the plotline so closely mirrored situations that were simultaneously occurring in my personal life that they become a source of both pain and humor. “The Office” always provided a degree of relatability for old coworkers, as well as a point of common ground in establishing relationships at new jobs. Dunder-Mifflin Infinity offered an easy way to burn hours at dead-end jobs, and some arcs even informed ideas at more-inspiring opportunities.

Like life itself, “The Office” offered painful goodbyes and bittersweet relationships, monumental life changes and career adjustments, loves and heartaches, laughter and tears, dreams and misses—sometimes all in the same episode.

I think we all saw some small -- or large -- piece of ourselves in every character. In Michael’s desire to keep fighting against the tide, Jim’s ability to find humor in somber situations, Pam’s unwillingness to give up on her dreams, Dwight’s fight to spread his worldview, Angela’s hope to hide from the world, Kevin’s inability to accept how others view him, Oscar’s search for normalcy in an unstable environment, Stanley’s pursuit of just making it by, Phyllis’s pull to mother everyone, Meredith’s wish to drink her way through the day, Darrell’s constant chase of what comes next, Ryan’s lessons learned from unchecked ambition, Kelly’s insufferable enslavement at the hands of pop culture, Toby’s struggles to fit in and express himself, Todd Packer’s complete and utter Todd Packer-ness, Erin’s fight to put a happy face on everything, Andy’s need for affirmation, and Creed’s ... well, I don’t think any of us saw anything of ourselves in Creed. At least, I hope not.

That’s a long way of seeing that, for the self-aware set, there was always something to learn from “The Office.” Maybe it was a lesson about office behavior. Perhaps it was a moral about interpersonal relationships. Or an instruction on an unwillingness to settle or an acknowledgment of dreams or the courage to share your heart. And maybe, just maybe, it was an openness to be taught to fly.

So much more than a sitcom and so much less than perfect, “The Office” was a celebration of the mundane and a plea to embrace the area of our lives where we spend most of our time. An urge to find the comedy inside the drudgery, the laughter inside the enigma, the pearl inside an oyster made of copy paper.

More than anything, this amazing series moved every one of your emotions, while making you laugh—long and hard.

And that is exactly what she said.

Limerick Friday LXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXIII: “The Office” Winds Down With Emotion, Plus Control The Order Of The Day On “Mad Men”

Dwangela arrived again
Andy said farewell, then
Dreams being chased
Memories can’t be erased
“The Office’s” graceful end

Angelina Jolie’s breast cancer scare
Preventative technique if you dare
Brave and inspiring to her followers
But must have many dollars
To receive this researched care

The politics of hate
Won’t ever seem to abate
Sit back and hear a story
Of a disastrous governor McCrory
Making a laughingstock of our state

Lied about the marshal’s flop
Sparred with Garcia, what a joke
Then won the Players on a choke
But the bad form just won’t stop

By his Mom Pete gets fenced in
As RFK and the merger cause tension
Don loses Sylvia through S&M
Gets Ted drunk from stern to stem
And who the fuck is Bob Benson?

Limerick Friday LXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXIII: “The Office” Is Closing In Fine Fashion, Plus “TWD” Puts Andrea In Limelight

Great epi that just wouldn’t stop
Dwight and Angela dance and hop
An unsettling Pam-Jim storyline
Hard to watch Andy pine
“The Office” is closing on top

Dudes can’t be disappearing
And force fans to stop cheering
Entering the stretch run
Time for the team to merge as one
And become a Pack all are fearing

Guide me from the sky
And cast me a supportive eye
It’s not always apparent
What’s needed in being a parent
Closed-hearted need not apply

Journalism owes him a debt
Repaid by making up a threat
Woodward losing his mind
Partisanship making him blind
Sad demise of a reporting vet

Andrea paid the crew a visit
As everyone pondered their kismet
Carl told his Dad to step aside
As worlds began to collide
Soap opera or action drama, which is it?

Limerick Friday LXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXVIII: Dunder-Mifflin Prepping To Say Goodbye, Plus A Brutal Habit Returns

Inevitable words finally came
But the disappointment still the same
“The Office” final season
Leaving for a good reason
They’ll go in comedy’s Hall of Fame

An offensive line coming up lame
Wide receivers that no one can name
Let’s throw in a rookie QB
Then whine when he goes 6 for 23
Tannehill’s gonna catch all the blame

Just another misogynist ape
Talking about legitimate rape
Akin the worst of all
For his ouster, all call
Every politician mouth deserves duct tape

WebSourced is back, it seems
Creepy Wasps with dreams
Let’s restart the illegal tactics
And pray for no fact-checks
This is the stuff of Internet memes

Another year, another draft day
Sleepers and busts, whaddya say
Back to torture us again
‘Til a kicker costs you a win
Fantasy football, we all must play

Last time
