John Bunting, We Hardly Knew Ye

Gone is John Bunting, leaving the ACC bereft of coaches who look like flounders. We will miss the aw-shucks declarations accompanied by a troubling impediment; e.g., “I want to she all of our fansh out at Kenan Shtadium.” We’ll miss his drunken, batshit-crazy wife putting a voodoo spell on Georgia Tech. We’ll miss seeing all his best players flunking out or getting kicked off the team for assault or marijuana or bringing firearms to "study hall." We’ll miss him frantically spray-painting a bell for beating … Duke?! We’ll miss the bug-eyed, strained-neck interviews. We’ll miss him standing for the alma mater after yet another loss as “fans” hurl insults at him. We’ll miss seeing his players flip off opposing fans on national TV before a game between a 1-5 team and a 2-4 team. We’ll miss year after year of highly acclaimed recruiting classes, followed by “student-athletes” rolling over for foes. We’ll miss the blinding gleam of aluminum in Kenan. We’ll miss Wal-Mart fans pretending that football really is important at UNC-Chapel Hill, then saying, “Wait ‘til basketball season!”

We’ll miss it all, until the Heels fan with a red UNC hat promises that Steve Spurrier is on the way, that Vince Lombardi is secretly visiting, that Mack Brown is coming back, that Pete Carroll is really an East Coast guy or that Urban Meyer has been biding his time until the Tar Heels job came open. We’ll miss the crash back to earth as reality sets in and the real candidates emerge.

Matt Doherty, anyone?

As a replacement, I vote for Butch Davis with Steve Logan as QB coach or coordinator. Seems like there some really good options out there for ye old Tar Heels. Bobby Petrino or Jeff Fischer after seasons over and he's fired are good choices.

Petrino will not leave louisville he's got a 10 year contract.

logan publicly stated he'd have to paid a butt-load of money to take the UNC job.

There will be some high profile jobs open after this season so UNC will have to wait in line, as much as they'd like to think it is, its not a high profile job.

Jeff Fisher of the Tennessee Titans is not going to get fired. And he certainly is not going to go anywhere near the UNC coaching job.

If you mean Jimbo Fisher, the offensive coordinator at LSU, yes, that is the type of guy they would be able to get. Logan said on his radio show on 620 that he wouldn't consider UNC.

Is Carl Torbush available?

all you state fans like to think that they can't get anyone. trying to squash logical candidates. I like it, shows you care. Doesn't matter that Petrino signed a 10 year contract, he can still quit at any time. Fisher is the most underated coach in the NFL but in order to see results quickly coaches are the first to go so baring miracle comeback the Titans he's out after the this year.

Logan -- fired by ECU in 2002 after a 69-58 record and now coaching in NFL Europe -- said Monday he's not aware of any interest by UNC in him. However, he said, "Carolina is a great school and it's a great job. I can't imagine why a coach in any sport shouldn't be interested in working there."

For what it's worth I think Bill Cower would be an excellent choice for NCSU when he's done in Pittsburgh at the end of the year. Already has a home here!!! Here's hoping Chuck looses a lot more games to make this happen.
